AdBlue Fault Guide

If your Mercedes Sprinter has an AdBlue warning light on, you need to understand what it means before deciding how to respond. Some messages give you weeks; others count down to a point where the van will not restart. The difference matters enormously if you run a van for work.

This guide covers every Sprinter AdBlue warning message you are likely to see, the fault codes associated with them, the most common reasons the system fails, and your practical options — whether that is a repair or a permanent AdBlue delete.

Mercedes Sprinter AdBlue Warning Messages Decoded

The Mercedes Sprinter uses a structured message system to tell you how serious the AdBlue problem is. Messages escalate from advisory through to engine start prevention.

Message What It Means Urgency
AdBlue: Please refill Tank is low — typically below 4-5 litres Low — top up when convenient
AdBlue: Refill immediately Very low — limited range before countdown starts High — top up now
AdBlue: Engine will not start in X km Countdown to engine lockout Critical
AdBlue: Engine start not possible Van will not restart after next switch-off Immediate action needed
Visit workshop — AdBlue system fault Fault in the SCR system (not just low fluid) High — may worsen
Visit workshop — Emissions Broader emissions system fault, often AdBlue-related High

Note: if refilling AdBlue does not clear the warning, you have a system fault. Topping up fluid will not fix a faulty SCR sensor, pump, injector, or catalyst.

Common AdBlue Fault Codes on the Mercedes Sprinter

P20EE — SCR NOx Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold

One of the most common Sprinter codes. The SCR catalyst is not reducing NOx emissions effectively. Often means the catalyst is contaminated or failing.

P204F — Reductant System Performance (Bank 1)

Overall AdBlue dosing performance is below threshold. Can be triggered by a faulty dosing pump, blocked injector, or poor-quality AdBlue fluid.

P13DF — Reductant Injection Valve Circuit Low

Circuit fault for the AdBlue dosing injector. Can mean a wiring issue, failed injector, or pump not delivering pressure correctly.

P2BAD — Reductant Quality Sensor Circuit

The AdBlue quality sensor is reading outside expected parameters. Sometimes caused by using non-standard or diluted AdBlue.

P2BA4 — Reductant Concentration Too Low

AdBlue fluid concentration is below the required 32.5% urea content. Can be caused by water contamination or topping up with the wrong fluid.

U029D — Lost Communication with NOx Sensor

Communication fault between ECU and NOx sensor. Can be a sensor failure, wiring fault, or connector corrosion.

Reading the fault codes is the essential first step before any repair work. Without knowing the exact code, you are guessing at the cause.

Why the Mercedes Sprinter AdBlue System Fails

  • AdBlue pump: The dosing pump pressurises AdBlue and delivers it to the injector. These wear out over time, particularly on high-mileage Sprinters.
  • AdBlue heater: The tank heater keeps AdBlue liquid in cold temperatures. Heater failures are common in the UK winter.
  • Dosing injector: Injectors can crystallise with AdBlue deposits and block, or fail electrically.
  • NOx sensors: Failed sensors trigger engine management lights and can prevent the system from dosing correctly.
  • SCR catalyst: In severe cases of system neglect or contamination, the catalyst can lose efficiency. This is the most expensive failure mode.
  • Contaminated fluid: Using poor-quality AdBlue, or accidentally contaminating the tank with diesel or water, can damage multiple components at once.

What Happens If You Ignore the Sprinter AdBlue Warning?

Mercedes is unusually strict about AdBlue warnings. If the warning reaches the “engine will not start” stage and you switch the van off, it will not restart. This is a manufacturer-level restriction in the ECU — it cannot be bypassed by topping up the AdBlue tank at that point.

Key Point

There is a difference between a low-fluid warning and a system fault warning. Low fluid: top up and carry on. System fault: you need a diagnosis regardless of how much fluid is in the tank.

Your Options: AdBlue Repair vs Delete on a Sprinter

Option 1: Repair the AdBlue system

Diagnosing the exact fault and replacing the failed component. This makes sense when the fault is clearly isolated, the van is relatively new, and you want to maintain full legal emissions compliance.

Option 2: AdBlue delete (SCR delete)

A software modification that removes the AdBlue requirement from the ECU entirely. No more warning lights, no countdown to no-start, no fluid to top up, no sensors to replace. Stoke Tuning carries out Mercedes AdBlue deletes on Sprinters — see our Mercedes AdBlue removal page for full details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just top up the AdBlue to clear the warning on my Sprinter?

If the warning is purely about low fluid level, yes. But if the warning says “Visit workshop” or includes a fault code, you have a system fault that topping up fluid will not fix.

How much does it cost to fix a Sprinter AdBlue fault?

It depends on which component has failed. A NOx sensor or heater replacement is in the hundreds of pounds. A dosing pump or injector is more. A full SCR catalyst replacement is the most expensive outcome.

My Sprinter has P20EE. What does this usually mean?

P20EE is very common on older Sprinters and usually points to the SCR catalyst degrading over time, or dosing problems that have been left unchecked.

Will an AdBlue delete affect my Sprinter’s MOT?

Vehicles with AdBlue systems are tested at MOT against their original emission standards. Removing the SCR system means the van would likely fail an MOT emissions test. Deletions are for vehicles used off-road, exported, or in specific off-road applications.

How long does Sprinter AdBlue last between top-ups?

Roughly every 5,000-7,000 miles under normal use. Most Sprinter owners find AdBlue consumption roughly correlates with fuel consumption — around one litre of AdBlue for every 15-20 litres of diesel is a rough guide.
