The BMW 320d is one of the most popular diesel saloons in the UK — and one of the most consistently under-appreciated remapping candidates. BMW’s B47 engine is deliberately restricted at the factory to protect the model hierarchy: the 320d sits below the 330d and 340d, and the power it ships with reflects that commercial decision more than any physical engineering limit.

A Stage 1 remap corrects that. It is a software-only change that moves the 320d’s ECU calibration closer to what the B47 engine is genuinely capable of, with no hardware changes and nothing that touches the car’s emissions systems.

The Short Answer: What Does a BMW 320d Stage 1 Remap Deliver?

Quick answer: A Stage 1 remap on the BMW 320d B47 engine typically delivers +43 to +45 BHP and significantly stronger mid-range torque, with no hardware changes. The 190 bhp G20/G21 reaches around 233 bhp; the 184 bhp F30/F31 reaches around 229 bhp. The most noticeable change is the torque pull between 1,800 and 3,000 rpm where the engine holds power more confidently on the way out of bends and on A-road overtakes.

Why the BMW B47 Responds So Well to a Remap

BMW’s B47 engine family replaced the N47 in 2014 and currently powers the 318d, 320d, and 320d xDrive across the F30/F31 and G20/G21 generations. It is a highly capable 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel with variable twin-scroll turbocharging, Bosch common rail injection, and BMW’s EfficientDynamics engineering — all of which mean its internal tolerances are built to handle substantially more than the factory software delivers.

The factory calibration is conservative by design. BMW produces the B47 in a single specification and tunes the software differently for each car in the range — the 320d, 330d, and M340d all share the same fundamental engine architecture but are differentiated by their ECU maps. The 320d’s factory tune leaves measurable room for a safe, reliable Stage 1 calibration that does not push the engine beyond its mechanical design envelope.

What this means in practice: Superchips, RemapKings, and other UK tuners report consistent +43 BHP gains on the G20/G21 320d (190 bhp base) and +45 BHP on the F30/F31 (184 bhp base). These figures are reproducible on a healthy engine with a quality calibration — not outlier results from an optimistic dyno session.

Power Gains: 184 bhp vs 190 bhp Variants

The BMW 320d has been sold in two main power outputs that are relevant to UK buyers considering a remap:

Generation Engine Code Standard BHP Stage 1 BHP Standard Torque Stage 1 Torque
F30 / F31 (2012–2018) B47D20A 184 bhp ~229 bhp 380 Nm ~440 Nm
G20 / G21 (2019+) B47D20B 190 bhp ~233 bhp 400 Nm ~460 Nm

The G20 gains slightly less in percentage terms because it already ships with a tighter factory calibration than the F30 — but absolute power output after remapping is similar across both generations. Either result is a marked improvement over standard and qualifies as a genuine step-change in driveability, not just a dyno number.

What Actually Changes on the Road

Mid-range torque

The biggest real-world change is not the peak power number but what happens between 1,800 and 3,000 rpm. The additional torque arrives earlier and holds for longer, which means motorway overtakes, dual-carriageway merges, and roundabout exits feel more assured. The engine does not need to hunt for revs to deliver what you are asking of it.

Throttle mapping

BMW factory throttle calibration is smooth and gradual at light inputs — intentionally so, to feel refined. After a Stage 1 remap, the throttle response sharpens slightly at mid-range inputs. The car does not feel nervous, but it reacts more immediately when you need it to.

Gearbox behaviour (ZF 8HP)

Most 320d automatics use the ZF 8HP, which is rated to handle significantly more torque than the factory 320d delivers. A Stage 1 remap does not stress the gearbox; in fact, the smoother torque curve often makes the 8HP shift more cleanly because it has a fuller torque signal to read across each ratio.

What does not change

The DPF, EGR, and all emissions hardware remain fully active. The car will pass an MOT. The engine’s cooling system, fuelling hardware, intercooler, and turbo are all unchanged. Stage 1 is calibrated to work within the existing hardware’s tolerances — that is the definition of it.

Is a Stage 1 Remap Safe on a BMW 320d?

On a healthy engine, yes. The key condition is that the car should have no outstanding faults, no boost leaks, clean injectors, and a DPF that is not close to requiring forced regeneration. Remapping an engine with existing faults does not fix those faults — it may mask them temporarily and cause problems later.

At Stoke Tuning, we run a pre-remap diagnostic check on every car before the flash. If a fault is found — a failing NOx sensor, an underperforming turbo, a DPF on the edge of a block — we tell you before we start. Remapping is not always the right first step, and we would rather tell you that than take your money on a car that is not in the right condition.

The warranty question: If your 320d is still under BMW manufacturer warranty, a remap may affect the dealer’s willingness to cover drivetrain faults under that warranty. For cars out of warranty — the majority of remapping customers — this is not a relevant concern. Stage 1 remaps are generally reversible: we can restore the original file if needed.

Cost and What Is Included

A Stage 1 ECU remap on a BMW 320d in the UK typically costs £250–£350 from a reputable independent tuner. Premium brands and main dealer tuning programmes charge more; budget operations offering it significantly below £200 are generally applying generic files rather than vehicle-specific calibrations.

At Stoke Tuning the cost covers the pre-remap diagnostic read, the remap itself, and a test drive to verify the calibration. The appointment takes around 1.5–2.5 hours. There are no subscription fees or annual renewal costs — the remap is written to your car permanently.

You should also declare the modification to your insurer. Our post on what a remap means for your car insurance covers what to tell them and what to expect on the premium.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much BHP does a Stage 1 remap add to a BMW 320d?

Typically +43 BHP on the 190 bhp G20/G21 generation and +45 BHP on the 184 bhp F30/F31. The G20 reaches around 233 bhp; the F30 around 229 bhp. Both also gain significant mid-range torque — roughly 60 Nm more than standard — which makes the biggest practical difference on the road.

Is it safe to remap a BMW 320d?

Yes, on a healthy engine with no outstanding faults. Stage 1 is calibrated within the engine’s existing hardware tolerances. A pre-remap diagnostic check is essential — remapping over an existing fault does not fix it and can cause problems. At Stoke Tuning we check the car before every remap appointment.

How much does a BMW 320d Stage 1 remap cost in the UK?

Typically £250–£350 from an independent specialist. Anything significantly below £200 is likely a generic map rather than a vehicle-specific calibration. The price at Stoke Tuning includes the pre-remap diagnostic, the remap, and a verification drive — no hidden costs.

Will a remap void my BMW 320d warranty?

If the car is still under BMW manufacturer warranty, the dealer may refuse warranty claims for drivetrain components after a remap. For cars outside the warranty period — the majority of customers — this does not apply. Stage 1 is generally reversible: your tuner can restore the original file if needed.
