VW Crafter & Transporter: P207F/P204F Countdown Won’t Clear — Real Reset & Fixes

If your VW Crafter or Transporter shows P207F or P204F and the AdBlue countdown won’t clear, don’t keep cycling the ignition and hoping. This guide gives you the reset path that actually completes, the live-data checks we run, and when a repair—or software for off-road/export—makes sense.

We cover Stoke-on-Trent, the Moorlands, Cheshire East and nearby with mobile and workshop slots.

What these codes mean

  • P207F — Reductant quality/performance. Often triggers the mileage countdown.
  • P204F — SCR efficiency below threshold. The catalyst isn’t reducing NOx as expected.

Both point to dosing not happening or the catalyst not converting. The fix is to prove which one before buying parts.

Checks to do before any reset

  1. Tank temperature & heater — On a cold start, watch tank temp and heater current. If temp never rises or current is zero, the ECU will block dosing and any reset will fail.
  2. Pump prime & pressure stability — Command a prime. Pressure should build and stay stable. If it collapses when the injector is pulsed, suspect a blocked injector, split line or weak pump.
  3. Upstream vs downstream NOx — On a steady cruise, values should diverge when dosing starts. If they track together, either no dosing is happening or the SCR brick is spent.
  4. EGT sensors in range — Out-of-range exhaust temps stop dosing and stall the reset sequence.
  5. Quality/adaptation flags — If AdBlue quality is flagged, drain/refill with fresh fluid and reset adaptations before road testing.

The reset/drive cycle that works

After fixing the cause and performing the service reset, complete this pattern to allow the ECU to relearn:

  • Warm fully: coolant > 80 °C; tank temp rising.
  • Dual-carriageway/clear A-road cruise at 50–60 mph for 10–15 minutes.
  • 2–3 gentle accelerations through 1,800–2,800 rpm in a mid gear.
  • Short idle, shut down for 2 minutes, restart and re-scan. No pending SCR faults should remain.

Common reasons the countdown won’t clear

  • Blocked injector — Crystals at the tip. Pressure is fine at prime but drops during dosing.
  • Dead tank heater or wiring — Tank stays cold; ECU never authorises dosing.
  • NOx sensor drift — Upstream/downstream values sit out of range; ECU thinks dosing has no effect.
  • EGT sensor faults — Prevent dosing and the post-repair drive from counting as valid.
  • Wrong reset order — Adaptations not cleared; countdown logic never completes.

Repair options that actually help

  • Heater/tank module testing and replacement where confirmed faulty.
  • Injector clean or replace; line flush to remove crystals.
  • Targeted NOx sensor replacement only when live-data proves the fault.

Software for off-road/export

For non-road applications, some owners choose a software solution to disable AdBlue dosing strategies. We read the ECU, save a full backup, edit the calibration, checksum-verify, and road-test. No resistors or emulator boxes.

Workshop example

A Crafter arrived with P207F/P204F and a stuck countdown after a dealer reset. Tank temp was static; heater current was zero. After fitting a confirmed-bad tank/heater assembly and clearing adaptations, we ran the drive pattern above. Dosing events logged, downstream NOx dropped, countdown cleared and stayed cleared.
