DPF Solutions – Clear the Block, Keep Your Diesel Working

Your dash flashes DPF FULL. Power drops and the fan roars while the van tries yet another forced regen. Sound familiar? A clogged diesel particulate filter (DPF) steals fuel, time and wages. Let’s walk through the practical “dpf solutions” we offer at Stoke Tuning, including a safe DPF delete option for off-road and export vehicles.

Why the DPF blocks in the first place

  • Short trips never heat the exhaust enough for a full burn-off.
  • Failed glow plugs or injectors add extra soot.
  • Cheap low-ash oil turns to ash in the channels.
  • EGR faults dump carbon straight into the filter.

Left untreated the back-pressure climbs, turbo life drops and the ECU can limp-mode you at 2,000 rpm. You need a fix that sticks, not another bottle of cleaner.

Our step-by-step DPF solutions

  1. Live scan and back-pressure test – We use Autel Maxisys to log soot grams and pressure in real time.
  2. Forced regen or chemical clean – Where possible we run a controlled static regen. If soot is too high, we flush the core with DPF-safe fluid.
  3. Smoke test for leaks – Split flexi joints fool the ECU and create false regen cycles.
  4. Software patch (DPF delete) – For off-road, motorsport or export use we can switch off DPF logic inside the ECU. More on that below.

When a DPF delete makes sense

Some owners choose a dpf delete because:

  • The core has melted or cracked – replacement parts can top £1,200.
  • The vehicle lives off-road on a farm or as a track build.
  • Export rules in the destination country differ from the UK.

Our patch removes DTCs, stops forced regens and lowers EGTs by 50-80 °C on load. We always store your stock file so you can restore it later.

Legal facts you must know

Driving a road-going vehicle in the UK without a working DPF breaks Regulation 61A of the Construction & Use Regulations. MOT testers will fail a visual check if the can has been cut open or removed. Our delete file is offered for off-road, export or motorsport use only. A written disclaimer is supplied with every job.

How we carry out a clean software delete

Modern ECUs like Bosch MD1CS008 (Transit) or Delphi DCM6.2 need bench access. We connect Autotuner, read the map, edit the filter monitoring group, rescale pressure limits and keep EGT protection active. The write goes back by OBD or bench pins, then we road-test while logging soot and turbo speed. Total time on site: about 90 minutes.

Real-life example: 2018 Ford Ranger in Hanley

Lee’s Ranger lost power halfway through a job. Codes showed P2463 (soot) and P246C (regen failed). A forced burn only cleaned 5 g of soot. We removed the DPF, soaked it in cleaner and flushed with hot water – 220 g of carbon poured out. After refit we logged 0 kPa back-pressure at idle and Lee drove off to his next call-out without delay.

Common questions

  • Will fuel use improve? Yes. A clear filter or delete often saves 3–5 mpg because the engine breathes freely.
  • Does a delete hurt the turbo? No. Lower back-pressure actually helps turbo durability.
  • Can the dealer see the flash? The write counter jumps, so plan ahead for warranty visits.
  • Is the job reversible? Always. We keep your stock file in secure cloud storage and on a USB you take home.
